Kwispaa LNG reaches major milestone with filing of Project Description with provincial and federal regulators

VANCOUVER, B.C. Kwispaa LNG has entered the next phase of project development with the submission of the Project Description to the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office and Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. The Project Description provides a comprehensive overview of Kwispaa LNG and represents the culmination of several years of engagement and planning, the results of which have been integrated into ongoing environmental studies and engineering work.

Unique among Canadian LNG projects, Kwispaa LNG is being developed through a co-management relationship between Steelhead LNG and Huu-ay-aht First Nations. As part of this collaborative approach, the Kwispaa LNG team has been undertaking joint environmental studies and engagement with First Nations and local communities.

Canada’s Kwispaa LNG and Hyundai Heavy Industries close deal for Front-End Engineering and Design of At-Shore LNG™ hulls for the Kwispaa LNG Project

 

BARCELONA, SPAIN – The Kwispaa LNG Project achieved another significant milestone in its development this week as Kwispaa LNG signed a contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries for the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) of two At-Shore LNG™ hulls.

This follows the recent Invitation to Tender to shortlisted EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contractors for the FEED work on the At-Shore LNG topsides, marine facilities, pre-treatment, and balance of onshore plant facilities. EPC contractor tenderers include:

  • Black & Veatch / Samsung Heavy Industries / PCL Industrial Management Inc.;
  • CB&I / Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC); and
  • TechnipFMC.

All FEED work is expected to commence in early 2019.

Steelhead LNG appoints Corey Goulet as Vice President, Pipeline

VANCOUVER, BC  Steelhead LNG has further bolstered the strength and experience of its Leadership Team with the appointment of energy infrastructure leader Corey Goulet as its Vice President, Pipeline effective July 3, 2018.

Goulet brings 33 years of experience in the energy infrastructure industry to Steelhead LNG. His work experience and expertise include the successful development and operation of natural gas, hydro and transmission power facilities; gas, oil and refined products pipelines; and oil and gas production facilities, throughout North America. Prior to joining Steelhead LNG, Goulet was most recently VP, Integrity and Projects at Tundra Energy Marketing. He also spent nearly 20 years at TransCanada Corporation, including senior leadership positions, eight years at Enbridge Inc. and four years at Home Oil, in various projects, operations, engineering and business roles.

In his role as Vice President, Pipeline, Goulet will work collaboratively towards successfully developing and leading the strategy for designing, contracting and constructing the natural gas pipeline and taking it into sustainable operating mode to meet the market demand for the affiliated Kwispaa LNG export facility. He will also support Steelhead LNG’s gas supply contracting efforts.

Jespersen brings more than 35 years of energy industry experience, including delivering major natural gas pipeline and LNG projects in British Columbia

Mr. Jespersen joins Steelhead LNG’s Leadership Team and will sit on its Board of Directors.

Kwispaa LNG shortlists four EPC contractors for Feed work

 

Competitive FEED contract to be awarded to two successful bidders in third quarter 2018

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA – Steelhead LNG and Huu-ay-aht First Nations today announced that they have narrowed the field of bidders to complete front-end engineering and design (FEED) work on the proposed Kwispaa LNG project. The project is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada and is licensed to export up to 24 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for 25 years. Initial production of 12 mtpa is expected to begin in 2024.

Following a rigorous Expression of Interest process, four Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors have been shortlisted. They include: Black & Veatch / Samsung Heavy Industries / PCL Industrial Management Inc.; CB&I / Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC); KBR; and TechnipFMC. Kwispaa LNG an opportunity for Huu-ay-aht First Nations

 

On Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, representatives from the Kwispaa LNG project team were in Port Alberni council chambers to provide more information about the Kwispaa LNG project. The proposed natural gas liquefaction and export facility was given the go-ahead after a Huu-ay-aht community referendum resulted in a 70 percent vote in favour in March 2017. The positive vote meant that Steelhead LNG, a Canadian company based out of Vancouver, would develop the LNG project through a co-management relationship with the Huu-ay-aht.

“We have the support of our people, we have the support of our hereditary chiefs and we have the support of our council for this project,” said Huu-ay-aht Chief Councillor Robert Dennis Sr.

Huu-ay-aht makes history with approval of Sarita LNG project

VANCOUVER, BC (March 26, 2017) – Huu-ay-aht First Nations citizens made history, becoming the first British Columbia Nation to approve a co-management development arrangement for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility.

On March 25, Huu-ay-aht citizens voted 70 per cent in support for the proposed Sarita LNG Project with Steelhead LNG. The proposed LNG facility, which also received unanimous support of Huu-ay-aht’s Ḥaw̓iiḥ Council (Hereditary Chiefs) and elected Executive Council, could be an economic game changer for the Nation of 750 people. VANCOUVER SUN – B.C. conference hears First Nations consultation a must for LNG proponents

Aboriginal consultation must be the top priority for liquefied natural gas proponents in Canada, say a company and First Nation that have partnered to build a LNG facility on Vancouver Island.

Steelhead LNG president Victor Ojeda and Malahat Nation CEO Renee Racette spoke to the Canada LNG Export conference in Vancouver on Wednesday about minimizing the risk of costly delays through collaboration.

Ojeda told a crowd of engineers and businesspeople that the company began consulting with the Malahat well before entering the regulatory process or advanced design phase.

Re: “Put LNG terminals far from people,” letter, March 25.

While we appreciate the opinions expressed in the letter, it is important to separate opinion from fact.

Natural gas is a safe and versatile energy source that is used every day here on Vancouver Island. Cooling it into a liquid — or LNG — is one of the safest ways to store and transport natural gas abroad to countries that currently rely on energy sources such as coal. In particular, LNG is safe because it is non-toxic, non-corrosive and non-explosive.
